Ukraine Media Partnership Program : Alumni

IREX UMPP program TV alumni from TV station Vezha (Western Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivsk) launched a city-wide promotion campaign devoted to the 6th anniversary of TV station:

Alumni-participants of the Ukraine Media Partnership Program (funded by US state Department, Media Development Fund US Embassy of Ukraine) from the promotions department of Vezha TV station, which was created as a result of UMPP US trainings from WDBJ-7 (Roanoke, VA), conducted a city- wide promotion campaign, devoted to the 6th anniversary of TV station in the region. During 10 days of campaign alumni conducted following events:

  1. gave interviews to local newspapers about Vezha TV station
  2. launched a set of radio self-promotions at Vezha radio station
  3. conducted a set of live interviews with advertisers
  4. conducted a live Q&A show with media expert (founder of Vezha TV station) Ivan Vovk about the role of media in local community.

Vezha TV station promotes itself as a regional local TV station, sensible to the needs of local community with high standards of social awareness. This concept of social corporate responsibility of media was introduced in Ukraine by US partners from TV station WDBJ-7 (Roanoke, VA). www.wdbj7.com  

Vezha TV station (Ivano-Frankivsk) UMPP03 partner launched a new promotion in October 2005.

Promotion department of Vezha TV station, which was created as a result of UMPP US trainings from WDBJ-7 (Roanoke, VA) developed a new promotion for Vezha Radio station. They main emphasis in promotion campaign is done on the unique content of radio broadcasting with 7 daily local newscasts and 50% of Ukrainian music (flyer attached). The main goal of the radio station concept is to "develop advanced awareness of local listeners about political and social life and promote democratic development of the region". Vezha invited Kyiv experts for switching from former city radio transmitter to a newly installed Vezha's transmitter and are planning to launch Internet radio access project by the end of October.

Kafa newspaper, (Feodosiya, Crimea) UMPP03 IREX partner launched a new on-line cultural diversity awareness project “Nations of Feodosiya”.

In order to spread awareness about multi-national community members of Feodosiya, Kafa newspaper conducted a survey and interviewed local readers on their national origin. As a result of the survey, Kafa launched a new on-line project “Feodosiya People” www.kafanews.com/people/index  Over 15 nationalities are presented within the project, including Germans, Jews, Tatars, Bolgars, Georgians, Karaims, Estonians, Belarusians, Armenians, Greeks, Polish, Italians, Russians (etc).  The main goal of the project is to broaden understanding of social conflict and its divergent functions in different societies, particularly in multiethnic or multicultural societies, by educating the community of one city about diverse cultural roots. The  project is structured in a way that helps readers apply a comparative approach in examining ethnic patterns, which allows them to understand society in comparison to other divergent ethnic identities.

UMPP Alumni Demonstrate Professional Skills at Ukraine-wide Exhibition of Mass Media in Kyiv “Informational Ukraine -2005”

On March 9-14, 2005, TRK Chernomorska (Simferopol, Crimea) won first place for the best presentation of TV promotion materials at the Ukraine-wide exhibition of Mass Media in Kyiv “Informational Ukraine -2005”. The main goal of the exhibition was to demonstrate the capacity of Ukrainian Media outlets, exchange ideas during extensive round tables among the directors of informational agencies, publishes, editors and managers of media outlets from different regions of Ukraine. The TRK Chernomorska team presented promotional materials of the TV station, which included: a new billboard design, new posters and flyers, video promotions of programs and souvenirs. One of the most interesting products presented by the TV station was public service advertising for Crimean region.

Ukraine Media Partnership Program is recognized by US Central State Circulation Managers Association.

During 2003-2005 US-Ukraine partnership of Kafa newspaper (Feodosiya) with The Herald Times (Bloomington, IN) circulation and management were considered to be key training issues. Tim Smith, circulation director of US newspaper traveled to Ukraine twice to conduct trainings and Svitlana Bachurina, Ukrainian circulation director spent two weeks within US-based internship.

This spring, Tim Smith, circulation director was chosen for the position of the vise president US Central State Circulation Managers Association  www.cscma.com  after winning a second place for Training-Motivation-Development during annual competition of circulation managers for trainings project development within UMPP partnership with Ukrainian Kafa newspaper.

UMPP Print Partner Kafa Newspaper Demonstrates Progress in On-Line Version Development

On April 15, during the final round table of Ukraine Media Partnership Program Publisher of Kafa newspaper, Iryna Prokopuyk presented major achievements of Kafa newspaper during US-Ukraine partnerships and IATP web trainings to the group of current participants of Ukraine Media Partnership Program/IREX – top managers of 3 independent regional newspapers and 4 independent regional TV stations. Kafa newspaper launched six new on-line projects as a part of on-line version of the newspaper.  They are: 

In addition to content changes, Kafa IT manager installed special statistics software to track website visitors; RSS news line was installed on the website of Kafa in addition to regular newspaper news line.

UMPP 02 partners RIA corporation (Vinnytsia) launched a new daily newspaper “20 minutes”

On May 29, 2005, RIA Corporation launched a new daily newspaper. It is called “20 minutes” and consists of 24 pages. According to Alexander Chovgan, RIA Corporation President, there is hope for this paper to break-even in about 6 months. Price of the new paper is equal to a cup of coffee (1 UAH, which is about 0.20 USD). The concept of RIA Corporation daily newspaper was drafted within the UMPP final round table April 15-17, 2005 under the supervision of IREX consultant Oleg Khomenok.

March 13 -18, 2005

RIA corporation (Vinnytsia) benefits from the visit of US alumnus UMPP 02 partner Gary Young from The  Herald (Rock Hill, SC) to  Ukraine: Gary Young, press room manager from The  Herald (Rock Hill, SC), visited RIA Corporation on March 13-18, 2005 to provide a training for setting up  the press plant. Partners  went over scheduling plans, bonus plans, operational procedures,  safety plans and emergency contingencies.  Mr. Young worked closely with Ihor Burko, director of RIA-poligraph, upon his visit to Ukraine and had this to say about him: "I was really proud of Ihor, and the progress he has made.  His facility improvements had really went further than he told me he planned to do, with better equipment such as image setters than I imagined he would get." Mr. Young observed operations of printing press "Solna", that was purchased  under UMPP partnership in 2003. American press room manager emphasized "Ihor has paid  for the press all ready, in a year.  He is running 3 shifts, and has quite a little business going on. His office area is completed, the lobby has all of their credentials posted, and all of his scheduling that we discussed last visit looks like that of any other efficient press operation in America." On the 21 of March Gary Young met with PAS representative Janet Demiray, Officer for Public Affairs, Tim O'Connor, director of IREX U-Media Program and Andrea Kalan, director of IREX Academic programs  in order to discuss results of the visit and provide feedback on UMPP alumni operations within two years after official end of partnership.

Additional Internet Training for Kafa newspaper alumni in Feodosiya:  IREX organized additional web training for Kafa alumni in order to develop on-line subscription, on-line advertising, on-line events design and administration. Iliya Shvez - IATP Web Content Developer for Ukraine and Julia Vorobkevych IATP Ukraine Alumni coordinator developed and conducted the training. The following topics were proposed by Kafa: Developing new approaches in on-line advertising;  News department: On-line communication with readers: methods and tips of organizing and conducing on-line chats, forums, conferences and organizing on-line contests for readers; Expanding feedback from readers - working on on-line editorial page; News department: Organizing on-line chats with local officials (political coverage) about city administration and local development.

Kafa newspaper young journalists school project for international education week:  After the second visit of US partners, Kafa newspaper launched a new project “Youth journalists training”.  US concept “young readers’ education” was applied to Feodosiya high school kids, who were selected for specialized practical courses within Kafa newspaper. During international education week, young trainees drafted a youth addition of Kafa newspaper and developed a structure for an on-line version of Kafa newspaper youth addition.

UMPP TV Alumni project: “Successful TV station management before presidential elections":

UMPP TV alumni elections training project: Three Alumni TV stations ATN Newsproductions, TRC Chernomorskaya, TV-4 (Ternopil) met in Kharkiv on August 9-13 for specialized training “Successful TV station management before presidential elections" conducted by two US trainers from WFIE, Evansville, IN  Bobby Gene Freeman, News Director, WFIE 14 and Clarence Mann, Production Director, WFIE 14, former partners of UMPP program. This project was designed by UMPP alumna Nataliya Kizim, ATN TV station marketing department manager, Kharkiv with support of IREX/UMPP and funded by Media Development Fund, US Embassy in Ukraine. The main objectives of the training were to provide three UMPP alumni TV stations and three other independent TV stations (Dnipropetrivsk, TRC "Sciphia", Vinnytsia, TRC "Kapital TV", Kremenchug, TV agency "Kiparis") from southern, western, and eastern Ukraine with training and consultation on TV station management before the Ukraine presidential election in October 2004 by conducting a week-long professional training in Kharkiv. Participants covered major topics like incorporating fairness in formatting and planning news coverage and special programming during election coverage; creating a master plan for covering the campaign, planning election day coverage, and interviewing techniques. As a result of the project, six independent Ukrainian Media outlets decided to form a coalition, a network of independent TV station to contribute to transparent election coverage in Ukraine in October.  All information about alumni project, topics of training sessions and project outline was posted on the elections portal developed by IREX www.elections2004.iatp.org.ua

American-Ukraine TV Station Link Will Continue Benefits of Ukraine Media Partnership Program: On the 5th of May, 2004, TRC Chernomorskaya, (Simferopol, Crimea) representatives Nataliya Kondratieva and TV station president Tatiana Krasikova met with Halina Izdebska, IREX Program Officer of the Media Development Division in Washington DC to discusst sustainability of the partnership and TV station successes after the completion of the Ukraine Media Partnership Program (UMPP), funded by ECA and administered by IREX.

After the end of the project in August, 2003, the TV station opened a new promo department at the station, developed a set of promo-materials (T-shirts, billdoards, cups, caps, flags), based on suggestions from KY03, organized a set of community action projects and charity events in the city and continued to work with Media Fund grants administered by the Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy in Kyiv.

UMPP02 partnership sustainability: Chernomorskaya TV station will host their US partners from KYTV, Springfield, MO www.ky3.com in August 2004 for a practical training session on “Promo department development”. The project was developed between the two companies and will be financed from their own budgets. Thanks to the Ukraine Media Partnership Program, the television station enhanced business, obtained new management and marketing skills and to developed general skills of communication with foreign partners. This enabled the station team to develop international media project on their own, with support of other Media Ukrainian grants and American partners advisors.
